Menthol cigarettes could increase risk of stroke – european lung foundation[uk]

Fda warns about menthol cigarettes business insider
The research, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, used information taken from health and lifestyle surveys from over 5,000 adult smokers in the USA.

Overall, 26% of the participants said they usually smoke mentholated cigarettes. Of these smokers, 3.4% also reported having had a stroke in their medical history, in comparison with only 2.7% of the non menthol smokers who reported a stroke.

After taking into account smokers age, race, gender and number of cigarettes smoked, the research found that people who smoked menthol cigarettes had more than double the risk of stroke compared to those who chose non mentholated cigarettes.

Some experts believe the menthol flavour makes it easier to start smoking and harder to quit because its taste masks the harshness of tobacco.
