I’m driving to New Orleans in a few months, and as I learned from my last trip, it is much better to wait until out of NJ/the Northeast to stock up on cigarettes. Since I will be driving through Alabama/Mississippi to get to Louisiana, and I have heard rumors about reasonably cheap cigarettes in these states, I was wondering which would be the cheapest to buy a few cartons? I realize the Carolinas might be cheaper, but that area is a bit out of my way.

One of my friends is an over the road trucker and sees a lot of the US. He tells me that some of the cheapest places for cigarettes are the Carolinas, most of the southern states and a few others. He usually buys like $500 worth of cigarettes at a time and sells them to his smoker friends at far less than the going price in the Chicago area. Little money maker he’s got going there I’m envious. He knows several other truckers who do that very same thing. 10 14 2009, 07 55 PM DeaconJ 7,852 posts, read 11,457,940 times Reputation 2580 I’m not so sure cigarettes are any cheaper in those three main reason that they are cheap in NC is because they aren’t taxed or at least that’s the way it used to be. I’m not sure how much they cost in Georgia, but I know they aren’t cheap. 10 14 2009, 08 45 PM ReluctantGardenStater 1,645 posts, read 1,853,897 times Reputation 1277 Quote Originally Posted by DeaconJ I’m not so sure cigarettes are any cheaper in those three main reason that they are cheap in NC is because they aren’t taxed or at least that’s the way it used to be. I know in TN they were about $5 for Marlboros, which was almost $3 cheaper a pack than many of the Northeastern states. 10 14 2009, 08 48 PM WestbankNOLA Location New Orleans, United States 4,236 posts, read 5,144,776 times Reputation 1296 Mississippi has or had some of the cheapest cigarettes in the nation, but they are getting ready to or have just passed a cigarette tax increase. People would drive from TN, LA, AL, & AR to MS to buy cases. Don’t come to Louisiana looking for cheap cigarettes. It’s even illegal to smoke in public in LA. 10 14 2009, 08 53 PM ReluctantGardenStater 1,645 posts, read 1,853,897 times Reputation 1277 Quote Originally Posted by WestbankNOLA Mississippi has or had some of the cheapest cigarettes in the nation, but they are getting ready to or have just passed a cigarette tax increase. In public such as on the street in the cities? That sounds outrageous.
I remember reading that prices in LA had gone up, but a ban? Doesn’t New Orleans allow public drinking? This is surprising. 10 14 2009, 08 57 PM WestbankNOLA Location New Orleans, United States 4,236 posts, read 5,144,776 times Reputation 1296 Public drinking and in the car it isn’t open container until the straw goes in. But the smoking ban is a STATE policy. The State of Louisiana and the City of New Orleans are like day and night.
In public as in any open public space, restaurants, hotels, etc. 10 14 2009, 09 27 PM ReluctantGardenStater 1,645 posts, read 1,853,897 times Reputation 1277 I’m surprised the state of LA hasn’t buckled down on NOLA’s loose drinking policies.
The smoking ban is so despicably commonplace at this point, but I imagine “open public spaces” is a rather broad term to define (or enforce). 10 15 2009, 01 37 AM gv0928 522 posts, read 1,415,015 times Reputation 312 South Carolina actually has the cheapest cigarette tax in the country. 10 15 2009, 02 16 AM Thomas R. The best and worst state for gas, cigarettes, beer and sales taxes MSN Money
Of the states mentioned here Mississippi seems to have the lowest cigarette tax. Well according to this anyway and it might be outdated.
